The Harbaughs Create Memories and a Legacy

The Harbaughs Create Memories and a Legacy

Ken and Kitty '74 Harbaugh have built treasured Shepherd memories over the past 40 years. While managing printing services, Ken has mentored dozens of student workers employed in his unit while they earned a higher education degree. Kitty's Shepherd education prepared her to teach in the Washington County, Maryland school system for 36 years with her last few years spent as a mentoring teacher. In addition to raising their two children, they opened their home to a student from Pakistan whose family has since become a part of the extended Harbaugh family.

"I have always been impressed with Shepherd students' dependability, positive work ethic, and, unfortunately, their acute financial need," said Ken, who serves on the Foundation board of directors and is the University's representative to the West Virginia Advisory Council of Classified Employees. In 2005, Kitty and Ken made a charitable gift to endow a scholarship which provides awards to elementary education majors, with first preference given to Washington County, MD students and second preference to residents of Grant, Mineral, Hardy, Hampshire or Morgan County, WV. While reviewing their wills in 2008, they added a bequest to their wills designated for the Ken and Kitty Harbaugh Scholarship endowment.

The Harbaughs cherish their memories of touching the lives of so many students as teachers, mentors, and scholarship sponsors. Over time, countless Shepherd students will carry Ken and Kitty's legacy across generations as Harbaugh scholars achieving the education so valued by this special couple.

QUOTE FROM KITTY IN SIDE PANEL

"As a mentor for Washington County (MD) Public Schools, I have worked with many new teachers who have graduated from Shepherd University. They routinely use reflective thinking and are adept at accomplishing purposeful goals, two skills needed to grow professionally. Shepherd University graduates are prepared for the rigor of teaching and willing to meet expectations necessary to be successful in the classroom. Often, Shepherd University teachers become leaders in their schools and within the school district. Shepherd Students Succeed, the college's motto when I graduated, still rings true for current graduates."
